MTGP World Super Bantamweight Championship (55.34KG)
Ryan Sheehan V James O’Connell
A fight of huge significance hits Capital 1’s inaugural event
A Bantamweight Champion V Featherweight Champion set bang in the middle!
James O’Connell (Courage Gym) enters into fight number 40 and has been rewarded with a shot at the vacant MTGP World Super Bantamweight Title on Europe’s fastest growing Muay Thai brand. James takes a step down a weight division to Super Bantamweight and has been a dominant featherweight for many years with wrapping up achievements including the ISKA Irish and European Titles, WBC International and Cage Kings. He recently had a world shot challenge at ROAR Combat in England. On July 8th, O’Connell will want nothing more to stamp his mark towards the end of his career by winning this exciting world title bout.
Ryan Sheehan (Siam Warriors Cork) enters into fight number 29 and at just 19 years old, has achieved so much in quick succession. He’s been in the mix competing at world class level with national champions both domestically and abroad. Inside the last 12 months, Ryan has hit some highs including a milestone career win on the Siam Warriors Supershow for the WKA World Title, defeating Japan’s Hiroyuki Moji. Ryan has now been signed by Japanese promotion RISE and makes a shift to Oriental style rules for a another world title vs Japanese superstar Tenshin which is set for May 20th. The Siam Warrior’s Cork fighter is no stranger to Japan as he made the trip there last May and fought ISKA World Champ Chi Lang to a draw.
MTGP knows the significance of both these Irish fighters and sanctioned the inaugural Super Bantamweight Title for two Irish headliners. This will accompany the international headline fight for the MTGP World Lightweight Title featuring Ognjen Topic (New Jersey) V Paul Barber (Double K London).
Tickets for the event go on sale this week from fighters and gyms participating at Capital One and there are still some sensational fights to be announced for the bumper card.
