Massive title fights top the main card of Lion Fight 31 which was announced today by Lion Fight Promotions for Friday, September 2nd at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut, and live on AXS TV Fights.
Reigning Lion Fight women’s welterweight champion Jorina Baars, who is best-known for her stunning victory over the phenomenal Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino at Lion Fight 14, will put her title on the line against Angela “Riptide” Whitley. And in the other title bout, the vacant Lion Fight super lightweight crown is at stake when rising stars Gaston “The Dreamkiller” Bolanos takes on Tum “Hollywood” Sityodtong.
Also at the top of the marquee is another of Lion Fight’s burgeoning female fighter ranks as European sensation Iman “Pretty Killer” Barlow makes her organisational debut. Iman Barlow recently defeated a tough opponent in Maria Lobo at MTGP3 in London and will be returning to MTGP6 this October against Swedish opposition.
“Lion Fight 31 is as stacked a lineup as we have ever put together and there is still much more to be added,” said Scott Kent, CEO of Lion Fight Promotions.
“Just look at the talent in the title fights alone – absolutely incredible. Then mix in Iman Barlow and the other fighters who are going to be there as well. This has the chance of being the best Lion Fight event ever.”
Baars (38-0-3) stunned the combat sports world in 2014 when she defeated “Cyborg” by unanimous decision, taking advantage of her superior technique to overcome her opponent’s brute strength to become the inaugural Lion Fight women’s welterweight champion. The native of Den Helder, Holland, retained her title at Lion Fight 25 when she bested Martina Jindrova.
Baars’ trademark victories over Justino and Jindrova earned her back-to-back Fight of the Year honors from AwakeningFighters.com which also voted her Most Inspirational Fighter for 2015.
Whitley, who hails from San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a former two-time WKA champion and recently claimed the WKN Kickboxing lightweight title by registering a third-round TKO (kick to body) over Romania’s Cristiana Stancu.
Perhaps no other male fighter within the Lion Fight ranks has been bestowed as much praise and adoration as Gaston Bolanos (8-0).
Bolanos, who fights out of Dublin, California, was named Inside MMA’s “Rising Star” for 2015 and also the Hispanic Athlete of the Year by Inca Cola. The highlight reel tells everything you need to know about Bolanos’ athleticism inside the Lion Fight ring.
Bolanos’ trademark strike has been dubbed the “spinning back elbow from hell” and the “spinning back elbow of death” by AXS TV Fights’ commentators Michael Schiavello and Pat Miletich. It has resulted in frightening knockouts of both Caleb Archer (Lion Fight 20) and Ben Yelle (Lion Fight 24), and it was certainly a key weapon in Bolanos’ last outing when he notched a decision win over veteran Thai warrior Kronphet Phetrachapat at Lion Fight 27.
Tum (born Kitti Patkham) earned his shot at the Lion Fight title by winning the Warriors Way four-man tournament in April. The Australian promotion and Lion Fight, along with England’s Muay Thai Grand Prix, enjoy a talent-sharing agreement, and Tum is the first product of Warriors Way to have the opportunity to challenge for Lion Fight gold.
Tum (75-22-3) defeated Pat Richards and Matt Cashmore to win the one-night tournament. The 28-year-old Thai was once a blossoming talent in the prestigious Lumpinee and Omnoi Stadium promotions, and previously held the WMC title.
Already a well-established title-holder at just 23 years old, Barlow (83-5-3) comes to Lion Fight on a three-fight winning streak that includes wins under the MTGP and Enfusion banners.
An opponent for the Leicester, England, native will be named shortly as will the remainder of the six-fight main card.
Lion Fight 31 will air live on AXS TV Fights with a special start time of 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. with commentary from renowned duo “The Voice” Michael Schiavello and UFC Hall of Famer Pat Miletich.
Tickets will go on sale on Friday, July 8, at 6 p.m. ET – just as the action of Lion Fight 30 hits the ring at Foxwoods. Tickets will be available at www.foxwoods.com or by calling 800-200-2882 or by visiting the Foxwoods Box Offices
